How Thinking Right Can Change Your Life

Second Corinthians 10:5 says, “…We lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ” (AMP). I remember reading this and thinking, “How can I do that?” It seemed overwhelming. Every thought? But one thing I know for sure is that God never asks us to do anything without giving us the ability to do it if we will put our trust in Him and lean on Him for the strength to do it.

The truth is, we can learn how to think right—with the mind of Christ—if we really want to. We have to be determined to do it, but it is possible because all things are possible with God. Our part is to read and study the Word and let it get into our heart. When we do this, then the Holy Spirit can help us recall God’s truth when we need it.

Over the years, I’ve discovered what I call “power thoughts” based on God’s Word that have helped me renew my mind to think like God thinks. This has been the key to my freedom from a lot of problems, like negative, fearful thinking and attitudes. If you think about what you’re thinking about, you will probably find, like I did, that the root of your bad moods or attitudes is in your thoughts.

Now no one can do anything about your thoughts but you. God has given us free will, and He’s not just going to do our thinking for us. If we’re passive, the devil will gladly fill our mind with garbage. But if we will get into the Word, God will show us what to think about and will give us the strength to do it. It’s a choice we have to make.

One power thought we can choose to give us victory over ungodly thoughts is “I can do whatever I need to do in my life.” This statement is based on Philippians 4:13, which says, “I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency]” (AMP).

As your mind is renewed with this thought, you’ll be able to overcome discouragement and press through and finish what you start when things get hard. I believe many people don’t feel good about themselves because they start out in the right direction but give up before they get to the finish line. It could be giving up on a relationship or trying to improve your health through eating right and exercising or getting your house cleaned up. In some way, we can all relate to this struggle.

In these situations, we tend to defeat ourselves with our own thinking. It’s easy to think, “This is too much for me. I can’t do it. It’s just too hard.” But if we want to change, we need to start thinking God’s way and say, “I can do whatever I need to do in life because God strengthens me. I am strong in the Lord and the power of His might. Whatever He wants me to do, I can do it!”

Let me share a practical example of this from my own life. A few years ago, God spoke to my heart very clearly that I needed to start exercising to strengthen my body so I could continue to do the ministry He’s called me to do. This was challenging for me because I had never really exercised on a regular basis and just didn’t like to do it. My eating habits were good, but it was time to do more, in obedience to God, to stay healthy.

At first, I struggled with the idea of being able to work out consistently because of my travel schedule. I didn’t think I could make a commitment to go to the gym three times a week. But it’s amazing how God will work things out that we need to do if we’ll just step out and do what we can do. I decided that instead of concentrating on what I couldn’t do, I would just go the days that I could make it. I didn’t have to do it perfectly. God was asking me to do what I could do.

This principle applies to any area you may be struggling with, like getting out of debt, working on your marriage, or cleaning out your garage. In Christ, we can say with confidence, “I am ready for anything. I am equal to anything. There’s nothing God wants me to do that’s too much for me. I can do whatever I need to do in my life!”
